Ecuador imports USD 1.435 billion in vehicles between January and October, driven by
growing regional demand
Latin America’s automotive market is experiencing a period of expansion—and Ecuador is
riding this wave. From January to October 2025, the country imported USD 1.435 billion in
vehicles, up 24% compared with the same period in 2024. In units, 82,302 new vehicles
entered the country, marking 19% year-on-year growth and confirming the recovery of
domestic demand.
Behind these figures stands a clear protagonist: China. Vehicles of Chinese origin
accounted for 58% of total imports, with 47,721 units and 36% growth compared with the
previous year. South Korea also recorded a significant surge, more than doubling its exports
to Ecuador. The Asian supply chain remains the backbone of the country’s automotive
imports.
By vehicle type, SUVs continue to dominate with 37,647 units, representing nearly half of
total imports. Passenger cars reached 15,827 units, showing moderate expansion, while
pickups soared with 13,314 units and an exceptional 111% increase, driven by the portfolio
of Chinese and Korean brands. In the heavy segment, growth was also evident: 10,584
trucks and 4,227 vans illustrate robust activity in both private and commercial transport.
The higher import volume also strengthened public finances. Between January and October,
tariffs generated from foreign vehicle purchases totaled USD 188.5 million, up 11.6% from
the prior year. For the State, the automotive boom translates into greater revenue; for the
market, it brings more options, more financing, and stronger activity in insurance, logistics,
and after-sales services.
This growth, however, comes with pending challenges. The expansion of SUVs, pickups,
and trucks increases pressure on road infrastructure, fuel consumption, and urban mobility.
As 2026 approaches, it will be essential for discussions on transportation, infrastructure, and
energy policy to advance at the same pace as the country’s growing vehicle fleet. China has
already established itself as Ecuador’s leading supplier; the next challenge for Ecuador is to
balance this dynamism with smart mobility and logistics planning.
